We've already seen a few great examples of fantastic storylines this generation - Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots leading the way, of course - and it seems this often overlooked aspect of game development is starting to come into its own. Even the most heavily action-oriented titles are looking to give us a special story with compelling characters.
While the critically acclaimed God of War series has always had decent stories, they were never focal points. Perhaps that's going to change with God of War III, as European gaming site PS3 Sense has uncovered a few interesting details regarding the script. Writer Marianne Krawczyk spoke about the mediocre dialogue we've seen in past games in the industry, but we won't have to worry about cheesy writing or voice acting in this particular blockbuster effort. In fact, Krawczyk says the script is already 120 pages long, and it's not even complete yet! Now, that's a good-sized script, and one we'd typically find in a story-driven RPG (a genre that appears to be dying, but whatever); not something we'd normally find in a straight-up action game. We have heard whispers that GoWIII will have a more robust storyline, but until now, we haven't heard anything from an actual team member. We still have to label this rumor due to the fact the site lists no source, but we're hoping it's true. The real question is, what's on those 120 pages?
This is probably a good move, primarily because GoW has never been a multiplayer experience and in this day and age, that can be a tough sell. If the gameplay isn't full and engaging throughout, players will immediately look to move online, but that option won't be there with GoWIII. So yeah, let's have that awesome story!
